Weardale Churchyard Project

The Weardale Churchyard Project took place between 2005 and 2008 to record the memorial inscriptions in Weardale.

The Project

Memorial inscriptions are at risk and will not be available indefinitely. Stones fall face down. Leaning stones are removed for safety reasons. Sandstone erodes over time and metal letters detach. 
The Weardale Churchyard Project was commissioned by Weardale Field Study Society to preserve the information on memorials in Weardale and make them available for the future. The project was funded by a grant from the North Pennines AONB, and managed by archaeologist Margaret Manchester, who trained a team of volunteers to undertake this work.

Achievement
