Allenheads Horse Track

The Challenge

Few people knew that the iron railings on the opposite side of the road to the old mine offices in Allenheads were part of a horse track that spiraled down into Allenheads Mine. The track had been totally filled in and only the top layer of stones above the adit were visible. The Friends of Killhope worked with the Allenheads Trust to clear the track, open up the tunnel, fit a security gate, repair the railings and install an interpretation panel.

The Value

The importance of lead mining to the village of Allenheads cannot be exaggerated. Without it, the village would not exist. The horse track is an interesting part of the village’s heritage and now it can be seen and understood by locals and visitors alike.
